France has confined more than 1,700 passengers and crew aboard the Ambition cruise ship in Bordeaux after a suspected norovirus outbreak and the death of an elderly passenger triggered a major public health investigation.

New Delhi: French authorities confined over 1,700 passengers and crew aboard the Ambition cruise ship at Bordeaux port following a suspected norovirus outbreak that claimed the life of a 90-year-old passenger on 10 May 2026. The UK-operated vessel from Ambassador Cruise Line, carrying mostly British and Irish travellers, had departed Belfast on 8 May for a 14-night Western France and Spain explorer itinerary, stopping at Liverpool and Brest before docking in Bordeaux on 12 May. Around 50 individuals, 49 passengers and one crew member reported symptoms of acute gastrointestinal illness, prompting swift quarantine measures amid fears of rapid spread in the close confines of the ship.
