Iran plans new ‘exclusion zone’ near Strait of Hormuz after US strikes on tankers

The announcement comes after the US military struck three Iranian oil tankers, which it claims were carried out after Iran launched ballistic missiles at US Navy warships.

New Delhi: Iran has said it plans to announce a new ‘exclusion zone’ outside the Strait of Hormuz, escalating an already tense standoff with the United States over shipping and oil exports.

Mohsen Rezaei, the new head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said the zone would target vessels that Tehran believes are attempting to pass through the strategic waterway. He said the new restrictions would be announced in the coming days or weeks.

New restrictions announced

According to Rezaei, the zone would begin from the line of the US naval blockade, extend towards the Strait of Hormuz........
