In an era where national identity and historical remembrance play pivotal roles in shaping a country’s future, the Narendra Modi government’s institution of Veer Bal Diwas stands out as a profound initiative. Observed annually on December 26, this day honours the unparalleled bravery and martyrdom of Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh, the young sons of the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

Declared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022, Veer Bal Diwas not only commemorates a tragic yet inspiring chapter from India’s past but also serves as a beacon for instilling values of courage, faith, and patriotism in the younger generation. This observance is laudable for its effort to weave Sikh heritage into the national fabric, fostering unity and pride in India’s diverse cultural tapestry.

Delving Into The Historical Context

The story behind Veer Bal Diwas is rooted in one of the darkest periods of Mughal tyranny during the reign of Emperor Aurangzeb in the early 18th century. Aurangzeb’s rule was marked by mala fide policies aimed at expanding Islamic dominance, often through forced conversions and persecution of non-Muslims. In 1705, amid relentless Mughal campaigns against the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s family was separated during the Battle of Chamkaur.

His younger sons, Zorawar Singh (aged nine) and Fateh Singh (aged six), along with their grandmother Mata Gujri, were captured by Mughal forces led by Wazir Khan, the governor of Sirhind. Refusing to renounce their Sikh faith and convert to Islam despite promises of safety and riches, the young Sahibzadas displayed extraordinary resolve.
