Opinion | PM Modi’s Coal Gasification Push: A Bold Step Towards Energy Atmanirbharata

With a substantial outlay of ₹37,500 crore, the initiative aims to gasify around 75 million tonnes of coal and lignite, unlock private investments worth ₹2.5–3 lakh crore.

In a decisive stride towards genuine self-reliance, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently approved the ambitious Scheme for Promotion of Surface Coal and Lignite Gasification Projects.

With a substantial outlay of ₹37,500 crore, this initiative aims to gasify around 75 million tonnes of coal and lignite, unlock private investments worth ₹2.5–3 lakh crore, generate thousands of jobs, and most crucially and dramatically reduce India’s crippling dependence on imported LNG, ammonia, and fertilisers over the next five years.
