Opinion | Minister Piyush Goyal’s Clarity Demolishes Opposition’s Cacophony

In the annals of diplomacy and economic policy, few moments capture the essence of strategic foresight and bold leadership as vividly as the recently announced India-US trade deal. Finalised under the stewardship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, this agreement stands as a testament to what can be achieved when personal rapport meets principled negotiation. While the announcement has been welcomed with optimism from Dalal Street to India’s Main Street, opposition, especially the Congress party, which wasn’t expecting the deal to come through, is now trying to muddy the waters by peddling half-truths.

Just a little while back, however, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal addressed the nation through a press statement, unveiling the contours of this “historic" pact. Ideally, it would have been better to do this in Parliament, but the manner in which Opposition MPs led by LoP Rahul Gandhi hijacked Parliament and insulted the Speaker, Parliament had to be adjourned after the suspension of 8 MPs. This constrained Goyal to make his announcements via the media rather than on the floor of Parliament.

That aside, Piyush Goyal articulately spelled out how, far from being a mere transactional arrangement, the India-US deal is a forward-looking blueprint that places India’s national interests at its core, propelling the country toward its vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047. At the heart of this breakthrough lies the unbreakable bond between PM Modi and President Trump—a relationship forged through mutual respect, shared democratic values, mutual economic interests, and a commitment to reshaping global alliances. Their camaraderie, evident in multiple summits and personal interactions, has been instrumental in navigating the complexities of trade talks.

He added how PM Modi’s decisive leadership, characterised by his unyielding focus on India’s sovereignty and economic self-reliance, ensured that negotiations were conducted from a position of strength. President Trump’s reciprocal trust in PM Modi allowed for concessions that might have eluded other leaders. Yet, credit must also go........
