Opinion | Why Are There No Eyes On Iran?
It is rare that the usual social media active personalities like Arfa Khanam Sherwani, Rana Ayyub, Saba Naqvi, RJ Sayema, Sagarika Ghose, and their ilk remain suspiciously silent on anything, even if the incident occurs hundreds of miles away in another part of the world.
Unsurprisingly then, they were talking when Israel decided to bomb the living daylights out of Hamas and Gaza following the October 7, 2023, massacre of innocent Israelis, or when US President Donald Trump decided to rain bunker busters on Iran, tearing through its nuclear facilities.
X posts, podcasts, and videos appeared in quick succession more recently when Sherwani decided to take personal umbrage to Aditya Dhar’s magnum opus film Dhurandhar, leaving no stone unturned — to use a cliché — to sow doubts about the perceived mala fide intent of the film in the minds of the viewers.
To little avail, it would appear, as Dhurandhar is fast emerging as India’s most commercially successful film, having garnered praise from most quarters except those who collapsed in paroxysms of spasmodic seizures in full public view. Surprisingly then, this coterie of charlatans, ubiquitous in their presence across platforms with unsolicited opinions, has been very quiet, seemingly stunned into apocalyptic silence by the events unfolding in Iran.
The Islamic Republic has been witnessing unprecedented protests led by Iran’s Gen Z — unequivocally fed up with the fascist mullah rule and battling an unemployment epidemic — which has now been joined by traders and business owners.
The most stunning images coming out of Iran, however, are of its women — young, bold, and beautiful — no longer prepared to submit to Islam or succumb to the whips and bullets of the Ayatollah’s regime, like the unfortunate Mahsa Amini, and scores of others. While the media and social media is replete with gut-churning images of young women and men defying one of the most brutal Islamist regimes on earth, the silence of the Sherwanis and the Sayemas of the world is rather deafening.
Why, pray, would you not let out a squeak while women are being dragged through........
