Opinion | Why Abhishek Banerjee’s Downfall Was 'Eggspected'
He came to epitomise everything that was wrong with Mamata Banerjee’s government and party
When Abhishek Banerjee got eggs thrown at him (and a few punches) at Sonarpur near southern Kolkata last week, it became clear to political watchers in Bengal that the end was near for the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the form created by Mamata Banerjee way back in 1998. And on Wednesday, it imploded. Spectacularly. That the match was lit by a floor-crossing MLA was befitting a party that was seen to be held together by corruption, not ideology.
And when the floor-crosser put the blame for the split squarely on Abhishek Banerjee, a man who was unassailable and above reproach within the party and his aunt’s government, it became doubly clear that the TMC had reached the point of no return. All because a fond aunt set aside her political instincts, ignored the alarm bells, and put her faith in her dear nephew, despite his evident unsuitability for responsible state politics, even though he was useful in Delhi.
