There is a widespread feeling that TMC’s corruption and abuse of power were unprecedented and that Mamata Banerjee's ‘simplicity’ was just a shield.
It would not be an exaggeration to posit that West Bengal seems to have become a vast criminal enterprise over the past few years. Now, precipitated by the change of government in the state on 4 May 2026, all sorts of skeletons have been tumbling out of the closets of the previous dispensation.

The fact that former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was met with cries of “Chor, chor!" even within the hallowed portals of the Calcutta High Court indicates how incensed people had become with her government. The same cries have also greeted her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, as well as dozens of Trinamool Congress representatives across the state.
