The capitulation suggests that the Periyarist-rationalist anti-Sanatan school still rules the roost by another name
On Tuesday, TVK Chief and Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister Vijay appointed his astrologer as his Officer on Special Duty. The appointment triggered a massive backlash almost immediately. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Indian National Congress, the Communist parties and several others who champion rationalism accused Vijay of putting superstition and blind belief on a pedestal.
Today, rattled by rationalist wrath, Vijay decided to revoke the order and drop his astrologer. The notification was swiftly withdrawn. The rollback was as dramatic as the outrage that preceded it. What began as an administrative appointment quickly spiralled into a larger ideological battle over rationalism, religion and the enduring grip of Periyarist politics over Tamil Nadu’s public discourse.
