Eighteen months ago, the BJP, fresh from an electoral setback in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, recommitted itself to a familiar political project: the unification of Hindu society.

Party leaders and campaign heavyweights, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath among them, repeatedly stressed the message: “Ek hain toh safe hain (We’re safe when we’re united)."

Unity, they argued, was political survival. It is, therefore, a striking irony that the NDA government should now find itself pulled up by the Supreme Court for adopting regulations that appear to cut against the grain of that very unification project.

In a pointed interim order, the Supreme Court stayed the new UGC anti-discrimination guidelines using unusually strong language.
