Global Watch | Why EU’s Kashmir-Ukraine Equivalence Is A Strategic Error
Strip away all the talk of values and shared democracy, and what is left is plain old realpolitik—and here the EU's conduct becomes very difficult to defend
The European Union’s High Representative on Foreign Affairs, in common parlance known as the EU foreign policy chief, recently visited Pakistan, and the common pointers that came out from the EU-Pakistan joint statement raised eyebrows in policy circles in New Delhi, which walked the long talk with Brussels and completed a historical ‘mother of all deals’ between the two biggest democracies. Point number 11 in the EU-Pakistan Joint Statement reads, “The Pakistan side briefed on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir. The EU side briefed on Russia’s war against Ukraine. Both sides expressed support for a peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy, in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter," has problematic overtures from the point of view of not just Delhi but also in European capitals, which are trying hard to woo away India from Russia and ‘de-risk’ themselves not just from China but also the United States of America.
