Opinion | Message In BJP’s Bengal Win: Caste, Religion-Based Rhetoric Doesn’t Work Anymore
This was a victory of the Modi Guarantee executed by the well-oiled election machinery of the BJP
It is an epoch-making victory for Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP in the West Bengal assembly polls. This has not only strengthened his hold on the voter psyche, but must have strengthened his resolve to move ahead with the government’s reformist programmes to make India a developed country by 2047. This was a victory of the Modi Guarantee executed by the well-oiled election machinery of the BJP. In Assam, the BJP won for the third consecutive time and in West Bengal, 15 years of Mamata Banerjee’s rule came to an abrupt end, which nobody in the Opposition anticipated.
Banerjee miserably failed to sense the political mood. She came to power due to people’s reaction to the Left violence. But nothing changed in the state during her tenure. Same violence, communal issues, infiltrator issues continued to haunt Bengal, keeping the development agenda on the back burner. That’s where BJP stepped in as an alternative—with the development agenda of PM Modi coupled with a Hindutva twist and assured the people of Bengal that BJP will not tolerate violence which was visible during the run-up to the polls.
