Broadway isn’t what it used to be — and I’m not just talking about the price
To honor our new year, I checked old stuff that should’ve been discarded back when Julius Caesar was around.
Broadway? “Can-Can” with Gwen Verdon. Comedy? “The Seven Year Itch” with Eddie Albert. Drama — Deborah Kerr in “Tea and Sympathy” at the Barrymore. Atlantic City round trip: $3.80. The Pennsylvania — then the Statler — Tommy Dorsey. B’way and 48th had very in McGinnis restaurant — dancing and a $3.95 shore dinner.
Norman Vincent Peale’s Marble Collegiate Church did a special Watch Night Service. Toscanini’s “Carmen.” Capitol Theater? “Miss Sadie Thompson” with Rita Hayworth. TV went big — Steve Allen and Guy Lombardo at upscale Plaza — (now with a block full of Citi Bikes fronting it) — $24.
Looking back, think. Now, what could be better for New York City other than a return of de Blasio.
Seems we’re........
