A person in the fog’: Mongolia’s new government
The Mongolian word ‘manan’, which can be translated as ‘fog’, is often used to refer to the cooperation between the two largest parties in the country, i.e. the People’s Party (Mongol Ardyn Nam or abbreviated MAN) and the Democratic Party (Ardchilsan Nam or abbreviated AN). On June 28, 2024, parliamentary elections were held in Mongolia, as a result of which the composition of the new State Great Khural was determined. The first weeks of its work were defined by several notable events at once, including the formation of a coalition government, which, in addition to the aforementioned ‘fog’, will also include representatives of the National Labour Party (Khodolmoriyn Undesny Nam or abbreviated HUN, which translates as ‘man’).
New speaker, old prime minister
At the very first meeting of the new Khural, with the objections of just a few deputies, a speaker was chosen: representative of the People’s Party Dashzegviyn Amarbayasgalan. Thus, he succeeded his party member Gombojav Zandanshatar on this post, who lost the elections in his district (10th place with 9 mandates) and did not get into the new Khural.
A separate important episode from the first week of the new Khural’s work was the re-approval of Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene as Prime Minister of Mongolia. Despite the objections of several deputies from other parties (8 out of 126), his candidacy for this post, presented by President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsuh at the second meeting of the Khural, was widely supported by representatives of the three largest parties that entered parliament. Thus, Oyun-Erdene will continue to work as Chairman of the Government of Mongolia, a post he has held since 2021.
