Islamabad’s Diplomatic Resurgence and the US-Iran Peace Talks
Islamabad’s Diplomatic Resurgence and the US-Iran Peace Talks
After being diplomatically isolated for years, Pakistan emerges as a strong global diplomatic power with significant influence in the Middle East and South Asia through its peace efforts between the US and Iran.
From Diplomatic Isolation to Emerging Global Relevance
It has now emerged as an indispensable cornerstone in the security and politics of the Middle East and South Asia. After President Trump’s self-imposed deadline to completely wipe out “a whole civilization,” Pakistan, through its astute diplomacy, brokered a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, saving the world from a catastrophe. Recently, Pakistan hosted a peace dialogue between the US and Iran in Islamabad. However, the first round of the negotiations failed. Pakistan is still acting as a backdoor channel between the two sides. The Prime Minister of Pakistan’s upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Qatar suggests the country has become a key player in West Asian security. Reports suggest that Islamabad would host a new round of peace talks between Iran and the United States.
Break from a Populist and Fractured Foreign Policy Era
However, just a few years ago, Pakistan was considered a globally isolated country. Under the former government, the country’s foreign policy was mainly subordinated to mere theatrics for domestic political gains. The then-political leadership of the country employed offensive rhetoric against many countries to appease public sentiment. However, this fractured Pakistan’s relations with many countries. The focus of the then-government was to increase its populism through theatrics, which tarnished the country’s international standing. Many global powers started viewing Pakistan as a liability rather than a strategic partner.
The coalition government formed after the PTI government inherited a diplomatically isolated and economically collapsed country. Pragmatic statecraft and astute diplomacy were needed to rebuild the country’s lost diplomatic prestige. Through its positive and realistic diplomatic posturing, the Pakistani establishment conveyed to the world that the country is prepared to act maturely and rationally. Islamabad avoided becoming a part of bloc politics. It treated all the eastern and western powers equally. Pakistan enhanced its relations with Russia and China while balancing its relations with the United States.
Pakistan as a Mediator in a New Geopolitical Order
Islamabad caught global attention after its extraordinary retaliation in the May 2025 war. This war proved the Pakistan Army’s military capabilities and the effectiveness of its arms and weapons. The war ended after the mediation of the United States. The US President Donald Trump repeatedly bragged about his role in saving the world from a nuclear war between the two South Asian neighbors. However, the Indian government denies any US role or mediation between the two sides in the May war, something that enraged Donald Trump and negatively impacted the relations between the two sides.
Pakistan’s new role as a peacemaker and mediator between the US and Iran has made the country an international diplomatic power. This shows that in the past few years, Islamabad’s international standing has shifted from diplomatic isolation to international recognition of its diplomatic influence. The results of Pakistan’s new diplomatic outlook can now be viewed. As the shadow of a new global catastrophe loomed over the Middle East after Trump’s self-imposed deadline, the world turned to Islamabad to use its diplomatic leverage with both sides.
The country is now at the global center stage after the US-Iran ceasefire. Pakistan’s hosting of formal negotiations between the United States and Iran, after playing its role as a primary conduit for indirect ceasefire talks, underscores a restored global trust in the country’s diplomatic skills and astuteness. Moreover, the US President, who is known for his repeated bragging about ending wars, also looked at Pakistan for saving him from further humiliation at the hands of the Iranians in the Middle Eastern theatre. Previously, President Trump publicly chastised and suspended Pakistan’s security aid. However, after the current ceasefire, he publicly acknowledged and praised Islamabad’s vital and effective diplomatic role.
It seems that Washington has recognized that enduring regional stability and peace are impossible without Pakistan. Islamabad’s geopolitical recovery underscores the fact that pragmatic and rational diplomacy, rather than populist adventurism, is mandatory for a country’s international relevance and standing. It also shows that no political leader in any part of the world should weaponize its country’s foreign policy for his short-term domestic political gains.
Although securing a two-week ceasefire between Iran and the United States and hosting formal negotiation meetings between the two sides are diplomatic successes for Pakistan, the failure of the first round of peace talks has increased diplomatic complexities for Islamabad to maintain peace between the two sides. Pakistan needs to take other regional powers on board to enhance diplomatic pressure on both sides to establish peace. Therefore, the Prime Minister of Pakistan’s upcoming visits to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Türkiye. The US President Donald Trump and Iranian leadership’s acknowledgement of Pakistan’s positive role and reports of a second round of peace talks by the two sides in Islamabad suggest that the country has re-emerged as a major regional and international diplomatic power from a diplomatically isolated nation just a few years ago.
