On the eve of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Canada’s recognition of a Palestinian state. In just a few weeks, it will also be the second anniversary of the October 7 massacre perpetrated on Israel by Hamas terrorists, when 1200 people, mostly civilian, were slaughtered, and 250 taken hostage and dragged to Gaza. Forty-eight, some living, some dead, remain captives of Hamas today.

Carney’s announcement and its timing was a slap in the face to Jewish Canadians, not just for these events, but for the targeting and harassment they have faced by pro-Palestinian protesters in Canada for the past two years. Demonstrators have marched on Jewish seniors’ homes and called on residents to “go back to Europe.” Synagogues and Jewish schools have been vandalized. A Jewish man was assaulted in a Montreal park in front of his children and a 71-year-old Jewish woman was stabbed at an Ottawa supermarket.
