NP View: New Brunswick synagogue vandalism an all too familiar attempt to intimidate Jews

Smashed glass has one message: You don't belong here

It should not be for Jewish residents alone to be shocked and appalled by last weekend’s act of vandalism against a synagogue in New Brunswick’s capital, Fredericton.

All Canadians should say plainly: We are ashamed this happened; it does not represent us; we deplore anyone who supports or acts on antisemitism. The significance of this happening on International Holocaust Remembrance Day must not be discounted.

While the police are still investigating, smashing the windows at a place of worship was a clear attempt to intimidate Jews. No one in a liberal society premised on fundamental rights should experience something like this. In better times, these would not be political statements.
