Opinion: Iran must free Swedish-Iranian doctor Ahmadreza Djalali

Djalali has spent a decade in Evin Prison on fabricated charges. Sweden and the world must demand his release

The case of Ahmadreza Djalali should have been resolved years ago. A Swedish-Iranian physician and disaster medicine scholar affiliated with leading European institutions, Djalali has spent the past decade in Evin Prison under a death sentence issued on fabricated charges following a sham trial. Djalali’s case is an emblematic case study of state hostage-taking and the Islamic Republic’s weaponization of its judiciary, its pervasive pattern of executions, hostage diplomacy, and escalating grave human rights violations — concerns that have become even more urgent amid rising geopolitical tensions and the deepening challenge of impunity.

Djalali’s case also represents a grave miscarriage of justice — both domestically for Sweden and for the international community. The exclusion of Djalali from the 2024 prisoner exchange — in which Swedish diplomat Johan Floderus and Iranian-Swedish national Saeed Azizi were released in return for Hamid Nouri — is particularly striking.
