The Foreign Minister of France’s brutally unpopular government has publicly entertained the idea of Canadian European Union membership. Prime Minister Mark Carney has cheerfully set aside the idea, for now, but still declared that he wants closer European ties.

Indeed, Canada should deepen trade and cooperation with the continet, but that can be accomplished without permanently kowtowing to the EU project, which seeks to gradually fuse its member states, transforming it from a trading bloc into a federated superstate.

Prior to the reelection of U.S. President Donald Trump, Canada had a very well-functioning relationship with the United States with easy mutual commercial access, and very loose mobility rules, in addition to strong military and political partnerships. None of that involved formally submitting Canada to direct American governance, the way EU membership would. Whatever problems Canada faces with a Trump-led America, EU membership would also prevent Ottawa from signing its own comprehensive trade deal with the U.S., meaning Canada would rely entirely on the EU for a trade agreement with its southern neighbour, or any other country for that matter.
