It hasn’t been a good week for euthanasia maximalists. Following Quebec’s never-mind-Ottawa lead, albeit in the opposite direction, the Alberta government has tabled Bill 18, the Safeguards for Last Resort Termination of Life Act. Whereas Quebec essentially dared Ottawa to stop it from pushing the boundaries of when euthanasia is acceptable, notably by legalizing advance directives — the “do-euthanize” equivalent of a do-not-resuscitate order — Alberta is waging a rearguard battle against further “liberalization.”
