Mark Carney, unless he suffers from a Trudeau-style self-immolation, will be prime minister for as long as he chooses to. If the technology to download consciousness is developed in the near future, this could mean forever. Contradictions abound.

Carney, despite winning an election last year, has little political experience. He hasn’t even come close to delivering on his promises to build infrastructure at record speeds, demolish internal trade barriers and get a deal with the United States. His relationship with the truth, and the cavalier way he discards it, would make the most seasoned Liberal party spinners blush. He is a walking conflict of interest, where there is hardly a corner of public policy that doesn’t touch on an area where he has a private financial interest. He does not possess any detectable principles, even by the standards of the always power-focused Liberals, at least no principles he isn’t ready to throw away. And he has an authoritarian streak where he is said to be dismissive of his MPs (though that last one might be a net positive).
