Pierre Poilievre’s troubles have only just begun

They’re just not that into you, Pierre. Ahead of his career-defining speech in Calgary at the Conservative Party of Canada’s national convention, that’s the message that a string of polls is telling the federal opposition leader. The big question for both delegates and his caucus is whether he’s even able to do something about it — and whether they want to let him try.

It’s a remarkable change from just over a year ago, when virtually every pollster had Poilievre’s party cruising towards a majority government. This is what now counts as good news for Poilievre, by the way.

The bad comes in his personal popularity figures, where Carney is absolutely lapping him. Liaison has Poilievre with a net favourability rating of -20, while the Angus Reid Institute puts it at -22 among its respondents. Those figures are both highlighted (or lowlighted, if you’re Poilievre’s team) by particularly low scores among Canadians over 65 years old, women, and people in Quebec. Maybe the most........
