Mark Carney still cares about climate policy |
For a guy who spent much of his career talking and writing about climate policy, Mark Carney has been conspicuously quiet on the subject ever since becoming prime minister. Part of that, I’m sure, is a desire to avoid the mistakes made by the last guy who had his job. And part of it is an understandable need to prioritize more pressing political issues, most of which revolve around the Trump administration’s ongoing attack on Canada’s economy.
But make no mistake: Carney clearly still thinks about climate policy, even if he doesn’t broadcast that as much as he used to. During his recent visit to Ireland he sat down with former Irish politician Alex White at Trinity College, and eventually their conversation veered into the subject. Carney acknowledged the impact that affordability concerns were having on climate action, both in Canada and abroad. But he also reiterated his government’s commitment to protecting it — and gave some clues about where and how that would happen.
