The reason Carney's response to the Maduro abduction is so unnerving

Like many on the Canadian left, I am disappointed in Prime Minister Mark Carney’s response to the US kidnapping of Nicolas Maduro. “The removal of illegitimate, corrupt, repressive, government leader — uh, Mr. Maduro — is welcome news,” he said this week.

With that statement, Carney has put Canada squarely in the camp of the US, a country whose president, Donald Trump, is showing himself to be as drunk on power as Maduro. It’s also in line with laudatory comments from notable right-wing leaders like Argentina’s Javier Milei and Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu, except that Carney at least paid lip service to Canada’s commitment to international law. “In keeping with our long-standing commitment to upholding the rule of law, sovereignty, and human rights, Canada calls on all parties to respect international law,” he said in his initial statement. 

True, Maduro is a despot. He is accused by many of rigging the 2018 election and it is widely acknowledged he flat out stole the 2024 election. As leader, he has failed to arrest an economic meltdown that has lowered........
