Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has accused the Narendra Modi government of responding to peaceful student protests over examination paper leaks with "violence instead of dialogue", alleging that the Centre has undermined public education, weakened the examination system and failed to address growing concerns over youth unemployment and education reform.
Writing in an opinion article published in The Hindu on Friday, Sonia Gandhi described the police action against students protesting examination paper leaks and the state of India's education system as a "day of infamy", alleging that security forces used excessive force, including baton charges, tear gas and pellet firing, against peaceful demonstrators in Delhi on 20 July.
