Melançon: 'Fréchette effect' puts a new face on election race

After a long and harsh winter, spring is finally here — at last!

Tree leaves are burgeoning, birds are chirping, flowers are blooming and Montrealers are back on terrasses — their natural summer habitat.

The sun is shining and the whole city, after months of hibernation, is suddenly coming back to life.

Spring is a time for rebirth. And for the Coalition Avenir Québec, it may also be a time of resurrection.

Over the past few weeks, since Christine Fréchette succeeded François Legault as party leader and premier, public opinion polls have shown a consistent, growing trend: just months ahead of the next election, the CAQ is gaining momentum.

There is a clear “Fréchette effect” in Quebec politics at the moment. This week again, a new Léger poll confirmed it, as support for the governing party jumped by five points across the province in just a month.

At 22 per cent, Fréchette’s party is now in a solid third place, only six points behind the Quebec........
