For the past five years or so, my friends and I have been attending Carols by Candlelight at the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul during the holiday season. It’s a Montreal tradition going back more than 50 years at this historic Presbyterian church at the corner of Bishop and Sherbrooke Sts. since 1932.

While I’m the furthest thing from “church-going,” singing along to the A&P choir every year has become a Christmas ritual for me.

The gathering started as a way to please a friend who loves singing Christmas carols........
