The steep and winding road over the back of Mount Royal connects the eastern and western sides of Montreal.
From the summit of the mountain, people can access Beaver Lake, the skating rink, the toboggan hills, the playground and the trails near the cross perched above the city.
It provides a conduit to the cemetery, a challenging route for hardcore cyclists, a racing circuit for elite athletes — and, for some drivers, a shortcut across town.
It’s also one of the most notorious political flashpoints of recent years for which the city’s plans keep changing. And with a new mayor, it’s back to the drawing board for Camillien-Houde once again.
