Despite friendly sit-downs with Premier François Legault and Municipal Affairs Minister Geneviève Guilbault in the early days of her tenure, Martinez Ferrada’s strategy is already being put to the test less than three months into her mandate.

The mayor is leading the charge against the province’s hardening and heartless line on immigration. She has taken up the case of newcomers in the city who had the rug pulled from under them........
