What Makes a Great Teacher?

A great teacher also makes students feel valued.

A good teacher does not simply teach a lesson; a great teacher inspires students to believe in themselves.

A great teacher understands that learning takes time and therefore gives students the time they need.

A teacher is more than someone who stands in front of a classroom and explains lessons. Teaching is not merely the transfer of information from one mind to another; it is the art of influencing lives. A teacher’s words, actions, attitude and relationships can influence students for years. A good teacher helps students to learn, grow, discover their abilities and become better individuals. However, becoming a truly great teacher requires much more than subject knowledge. It requires patience, empathy, adaptability, passion and a genuine commitment to the growth of every student. A great teacher makes learning simple. Good teaching begins with clear communication. A teacher needs to explain ideas clearly so that students can understand them without unnecessary confusion. Communication, however, is not only about speaking. It also includes listening, asking questions, observing students and understanding their responses. When a teacher communicates with patience and respect, students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, asking questions and participating in the learning process. Clear communication builds a bridge between the teacher and the learner. A great teacher also makes students feel valued. Every student wants to feel respected and appreciated. A teacher’s care and kindness can make a significant difference in a child’s learning journey. Taking time to understand students, recognising their strengths, knowing their interests and being aware of their difficulties and talents can create a supportive classroom environment.
