Why I applaud Meghan for refusing to keep calm and carry on

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have finally had enough.

Enough of the disproportionate scrutiny, blatant misogyny and relentless racism that has been hurled at them (well, mostly at Meghan) unremittingly since they got married in 2018.

Their unceremonious ditching of the royal family is a reminder that we don’t just have to sit there and take it. The critics are, of course, outraged, but walking away can be the most powerful weapon against racial abuse.

The pair has decided to ‘step back’ from senior roles within the royal family. They plan to become ‘financially independent’, launch a new ‘charitable entity’ and balance their time between the UK and North America.

And they announced all of this on their Instagram page, apparently without consulting the Palace… power move.

Aside from the welcome step towards dismantling the archaic institution of the monarchy, and the giant f**k you this sends to the racists who have hounded them, what I love about this decision is the refusal to tolerate toxic behaviour.

If the British mantra is ‘keep calm and carry on’, Meghan whirled in with her American assertiveness and said, ‘nope!’. It is beautiful to behold, and very much the energy I want to adopt in 2020.

In the last year alone I have sat button-lipped at a dinner table as a racist debate raged around me, I’ve ploughed on in a job interview after being asked a string of racist questions, I have prioritised other people’s fragility and ‘not making a scene’ over my own........
