No white woman can represent all women

Caroline Lucas’s call for an emergency cabinet of women to stop Brexit reminds me yet again why language is so very important.

‘Women’ has become synonymous with white women – as shown by the fact no women of colour were invited to join this group.

Many white women will position themselves as allies for all women but in the same breath are unwilling to pass the mic or include women of colour in spaces with power or where key decisions are being made. Or they will think of women of colour as an afterthought – just like Lucas has now said in a statement and tweeted that she would ‘love Diane Abbott to be involved’ in this cabinet.

As the shadow home secretary – a woman of colour with power and influence who is strongly pro-Remain – I find it fascinating that Diane Abbott appears to have only now been asked to be involved, via social media nonetheless.

I believe this is called posturing after you make a boo boo i.e. disregarding all the women of colour in politics when asking a for a key cabinet to be formed to halt Brexit.

Being a woman doesn’t mean we can represent all women and even now, many waves later this knowledge seems to be unfathomable to white women.
