Don't be fooled. Leaving the EU on 31 October doesn't mean 'getting Brexit done'

Of all the myths and falsehoods put out by this government, one of the most egregious is that leaving on 31 October means that ‘we can get Brexit done’.

It’s a falsehood because it spins the impression that once Britain has left the EU, with one bound we will be free of all the bitterness and economic uncertainty that has built up over the past three years, and the divisions which lay behind the vote for Leave.

The reality is the opposite.

Our departure from the EU wouldn’t close the door on Brexit. It would take us into a new phase of protracted difficult negotiations with our closest neighbours and biggest trading partners – negotiations that would be taking place against economic shock, widespread job losses, possible shortages of food and medicine and even, according to the government’s own assessment, the prospect of civil unrest.

Even the chancellor Sajid Javid admitted this week that he had no idea how much a no-deal Brexit would cost the UK economy. What is certain, though, is that the poorest will be hit the hardest while hedge fund........
