A general election is not the answer to this Brexit mess

Parliament returned from the summer recess this week and rarely have I seen such anger among MPs. I share that anger.

This used to be about Brexit and the way the shifting sands of the Brexit debate have moved in the three years since the referendum. But no longer. There is more at stake than just our future relationship with the European Union, vitally important though that is.

What lies behind MPs’ anger is that Parliament faces being stripped of its purpose by an executive which is dangerously out of control. Government over-reach under Boris Johnson is at new levels.

Our democracy is at risk. So are the prosperity, welfare and security of millions of people in this country. Make no mistake: the Brexit planned by Boris Johnson and his right-wing cabal in Downing Street will soften up our country to be asset-stripped by corporate America. No wonder Donald Trump is cheering him on.

But MPs will not take this assault on our country’s future and our democracy lying down. That is why there are cross-party moves to block Johnson’s plans for us to crash out of the EU on October 31st.
