Two interesting things happened during a constitutional debate in the Scottish Parliament yesterday.

Not words you hear often, but they go to the heart of how the two largest opposition parties are likely to go about their business from here on in.

The one that made everyone sit up and take notice was the decision by the 17 Reform UK Scotland MSPs to leave the Chamber and take no further part in the debate about whether Scotland has a right to decide its own constitutional future.

Now they have a point that this is a matter reserved fully to Westminster, but the motion was non-binding and not legislative in any sense; it was just a debate. But being able to debate your opponents on something so fundamental is part and parcel of the job.

That wasn’t their take on it - to them it was a waste of their and parliamentary time. But the SNP is the Scottish Government, and delivering on independence is their raison d’etre, which is........
