I felt proud to be British when I had my Covid vaccine – it shows the power of public services

The state is a mighty thing, awe-inspiring and humbling when we see it swing into action. In times of national crisis, it’s where we turn for help, and as a result we have heard very little recently from those on the right of politics who would normally say that the state is too big, too powerful, too intrusive.

We don’t hear, for example, complaints that the Covid vaccination programme is too expensive. No one worries about overmanning at the vaccination centres. An extra £1.6bn in the Budget to support the vaccination roll-out? Why not? Our society may have become more atomised, and the cult of the individual may hold sway, but, still, it’s left to the apparatus of the state to fix the big problems. I speak as someone who’s now had the benefit of this assistance.
