Allison Pearson is not a test case for the limits on freedom speech

Let’s take a mirror to a story that has been running in some newspapers for the past week, something that, for The Daily Telegraph at least, eclipsed the resignation of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and which, the paper says, threatens the very principle of free speech in the United Kingdom.

Imagine you were one of two young, non-white people taking part in a demonstration in Manchester in support of Pakistan’s PTI party, the political party founded by former Prime Minister Imran Khan. You posed for a video flanked by police officers from the local force. It is a scene that speaks of peaceful protest, racial harmony and law and order.

And then imagine that this video was reposted by Allison Pearson, a Daily Telegraph columnist with more than 180,000 followers on X, and you were incorrectly identified as Palestinian protesters (even though it is clear you are holding a Pakistan flag), erroneously locating you in London by saying the officers present were from the Metropolitan Police, and describing you as “Jew haters”.........
