Our bodies are meant to change - let's celebrate that as we come out of lockdown

Before the pandemic, I had more or less unplugged myself from the diet culture pervasive in our society, which is a belief system that worships slimness, places good and bad values on body size and food, and promotes weight loss as the route to some sort of self-accepting nirvana. I was able to do this was because I had taken up lifting weights, and I expanded my friendship circle to include my teammates who also valued getting strong over getting slim, so I was less exposed to it.

But the past 12 months have been relentless in terms of people talking about their weight gain, what they have eaten, the so-called jokes they make about the clothes they can’t fit into anymore, to the point that 99 per cent of conversations with loved ones will touch upon this.

Although I have unfollowed a lot of people who post problematic things about diet on social media, I also know that there is a lot of talk circulating around people wanting to lose weight before the potential end of restrictions on 21 June.

I am now recovered, but I had long Covid for about 10 months, and during this time........
