It would be the understatement of the century to say that there are downsides to Donald Trump’s unpredictability. Wild swings in mood and opinion are not a desirable characteristic in the most powerful person on the planet.
From a knee-jerk war, launched seemingly without any plan in the world’s most crucial shipping lane, to on-again-off-again tactical announcements over social media, a threat to annex the territory of a Nato ally, and slapping tariffs on countries apparently on the basis of personal grudges or whims, he is a one-man chaos machine.
The US President has never been renowned for his level head or systematic approach to decision-making, despite claiming to be a “very stable genius”. But he certainly seems even worse in his second term, whether comparing himself to Jesus, denouncing the Pope as “weak on crime”, or threatening that “a whole civilisation will die” beneath American bombs.
Some Democrats and former Maga loyalists are now asking if he could be removed under the 25th Amendment of the US Constitution on the grounds that Trump is incapacitated to such a degree that he cannot fulfil the office. Or, to use the more direct words that headline a column by British peer Daniel Hannan: “Donald Trump is losing his mind”.
