Elon Musk changed the rules – and the Democrats just let him

The world’s undisputed military superpower went to the polls on Tuesday, with attacks on the integrity of its election process coming from within and without.

Russia stands accused of interfering with the ballot through disinformation and bomb hoaxes sent to polling stations in heavily Democratic areas. Donald Trump and Republican outriders have been making baseless accusations of electoral interference. Americans are losing trust in the integrity of the election.

Despite all this, Elon Musk, the owner of one of the most significant social networks when it comes to that election will not be spending election night in his office, helping engineers preserve the integrity of his country’s vote. Instead, he will be partying with Donald Trump at the most exclusive of a series of election night soirees at the former president’s Florida mansion, Mar-a-Lago.

The brazen night-of-vote partisanship rounds off an extraordinary two years in which Musk has single-handedly rewritten the rule book of how social media networks interact with US politics – entirely to the advantage of Trump and the Republican Party he has reshaped in his image.

Musk launched his own PAC – an independent organisation designed to support a political candidate – with at least $120 million of funds........
