The real reason Starmer has not been kicked out by his own MPs
Labour MPs are obsessed with one question: how long Sir Keir Starmer will last? For more than six months now, it has been a near-daily obsession in Westminster to discuss whether the Prime Minister will keep his job through the latest scandal – and gaze into a crystal ball to work out the date when he will leave No 10 for the last time.
This is, of course, a valid topic of discussion. It is fundamental to democracy that the people, either directly or through their representatives, can remove their leaders when they feel let down.
And Starmer has made some very real mistakes, of which the appointment of Peter Mandelson as Ambassador to Washington is only the most eye-catching.
But Westminster is stuck. Politicians are going round in circles on the question of the Prime Minister’s future, and we are no closer to any real resolution.
