Keir Starmer could face the same end as his old enemy Boris Johnson

Sir Keir Starmer hated Boris Johnson when he faced him across the floor of the House of Commons. He may now have more sympathy for his old enemy’s plight.

The Prime Minister wanted to get his Government back on track in 2026 with a relentless focus on the cost of living. So much for that. After weathering a Donald Trump hurricane in January, Starmer is facing more stormy weather in February, this time of his own making.

The mood in Westminster is positively mutinous. Starmer’s future has been in doubt for months, as questions over his political strategy have been compounded by his dire poll ratings. Even many of the MPs who have admired him in the past now fear their own jobs will be lost at the next general election if Starmer is not ejected from his before then.

The parallel with Johnson is that the Prime Minister, like his predecessor, is being dogged by questions of poor judgement which have hollowed out the trust that his own party once had in him. In Johnson’s case, the final straw for his time in No 10 was the revelation that he had been warned about the sexual indiscretions of his ally Chris Pincher before making him the deputy chief whip.
