Say what you like about Boris Johnson’s performance as prime minister – but not even his fiercest critics can deny his power as a showman.

Here we are, almost two years since the collapse of his government and his departure from Downing Street. He hasn’t even been a Member of Parliament since last summer.

Yet amidst the ocean of ink being spilled about the local elections and what they mean for the Government, who still has a news story of his very own? Boris Johnson, who managed to put new voter ID law in the spotlight by reportedly forgetting to take any identification to the polling station. (He later returned with the ID he needed to vote.)

Part of the magic is that we cannot be certain that this was a cynical ploy for media attention. The former prime minister is, by all accounts, precisely the sort of person who would genuinely forget.

Nor perhaps is it surprising that someone........
