I spent months talking to Brexit voters. Westminster, not Europe, created this atmosphere

On Monday night, I posted a video of myself online talking about the aftermath of the European elections and the importance of trying to address the deepening polarisation between those who want to leave the EU and those who want to remain. Within 24 hours, it had been viewed or shared more than 170,000 times – indicating it had struck a chord with many people.

During the campaign for the 2016 EU referendum and in its immediate aftermath, a range of options were – briefly – discussed over our future relationship with Europe; a customs union, the Norway option, staying in the single market.

Delighted at election of 7 Green MEPs – but our country remains as divided as ever

We’ll continue to campaign for People’s Vote, but also for Citizens Assemblies – none of us can stay in our comfort zones, listening only to those who sound like us

None of these were properly explored, nor were the trade-offs of leaving the EU ever honestly explained, which is why I believe we need a People’s Vote on our future relationship with Europe. In the three years since the referendum, leaving the EU has come to mean only one thing: a hard Brexit, quite possibly without a deal. That is now the only acceptable version of Leave and one that is being echoed by most of the contenders for the Conservative party leadership who are all running scared of losing even the supporters they have........
