Last night in the House of Commons, during a momentous debate for the history of our country, I backed a cross-party motion to allow us to debate and pass a Bill today to prevent a disastrous crash-out Brexit.

I said that we know from Operation Yellowhammer that such a Brexit would result in shortages of food and fuel, people unable to get their life-saving medicines, and a nightmare for the people of Northern Ireland.

I also spoke about the three million, the people from 27 other EU states, who have made their lives here in this country expecting that their contribution would be valued, instead of which they are now in an intolerable limbo, not knowing whether their rights will be upheld.

And I spoke about the underlying, critical, problems that have led to us this crisis – and specifically our ongoing lack of a codified written constitution.

At the moment, it is only the unwritten, uncodified understandings that protect the body politic, with minimal checks, balances and........
