People used to worry that calculators would harm kids’ math skills. Decades later, AI tech could be the next evolution of that problem.

History is littered with anxiety-filled headlines like “new technology X is causing a problem,” but AI may be the ruler of all of these pearl-clutching concerns, as the controversial tech is blamed for a host of different evils. Now, a new report suggests that one of the bigger worries about AI may actually be coming true: Yes, overreliance on AI could be causing a genuine problem. Workplace AI use is so widespread and so frequent for some users that a hefty chunk of the workforce now thinks they couldn’t soldier through a day at their workstation without AI’s help.
In fact, half of the employees in a new survey said they feel like they rely too much on AI, and just under a third said they “feel they can’t function without it.” Worse still, at least from a psychology of work point of view, nearly two in five workers (39 percent) admit they think relying on AI is........
