It was when we neared the third hour of waiting on the tarmac at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport that I began to get really bored of being stuck on the passenger jet. I had already done it once before that day, at Vienna airport in Austria, where we waited to taxi over to an area on the fringes of the airfield to be doused in a warmed-up glycol mix.
