EU accelerates migrant repatriations with ICE-style tactics
According to the European Commission, the law “encourages voluntary return,” but in cases of resistance, methods straight out of the ICE playbook come into play.
In the wake of growing support for the far right across Europe, the EU is adopting a fierce attitude toward migrants, adopting a draconian regulation to expel those deemed undesirable. Overnight between Monday and Tuesday, the European Parliament and the Council reached an agreement – based on a proposal made by the Commission in March 2025 – on a “new common system” to facilitate returns through a “swifter, simpler and more effective” procedure.
The regulation is the final complement to the Pact on Migration and Asylum, which already includes roughly ten pieces of legislation and is set to enter into full effect by June 12. “Today's agreement shows that we are bringing our European house in order,” commented the Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, Austria’s Magnus Brunner. “With the new rules, we have more control over who can come to the EU, who can stay and who needs to leave. This is what citizens expect and this is what we are delivering.” According to the text, this is all supposed to be done “in full respect of fundamental rights.”
