Is It Time To End 'Performative Gifting'?

Money expert Martin Lewis does not want you to “overgift” this festive season.

He has campaigned for a No Unnecessary Present Pact in the past; a sort of Christmas “prenup”, where you agree with your loved ones not to try to one-up each other with pressies that might not really be needed or wanted.

“With Christmas, it’s a zero-sum game. I give to you. You feel obligated to give back to me at a similar value. Now, to fulfil that obligation, we do tit-for-tat giving, which means people end up with tat,” he said.

But is it really as easy as just saying “let’s not go wild this year” – a move I’m sure a lot of us have tried, fruitlessly, in the past?
