Barbecue crab is a dish steeped in Gulf Coast traditions and family legacy.

Unlike the slow-smoked meats associated with Texas barbecue, these crabs aren’t actually smoked or slathered in sauce. Instead, they’re dusted with a dry rub and deep fried. The result is a singular taste: sweet crabmeat tinged with spicy heat, a flavor unique to the seafood and Cajun traditions of the upper Gulf Coast. Barbecue crab is Texas coastal cuisine at its most idiosyncratic, representative if the families that have created and served the dish over the last 80 years.
